Opening Day Delight: We Edge Moanda Basket as Coach Thomas Sends Message to Benghazi

History made. Nerves tested. Statement delivered. We opened our Elite 16 campaign with a win — and we are not backing down from what comes next.

We kicked off our Elite 16 campaign with a 71–69 victory over Moanda Basket, securing our first ever win at this stage. After becoming the first Ghanaian team to reach the Elite 16 last year, we have now taken it a step further — becoming the first from Ghana to win at this level. Progress is not a moment for us. It is a pattern.

But the game tightened late. What looked comfortable quickly turned into a test of nerve, and we were pushed all the way to a two-point finish.

Control, Then Chaos

We started the game on the front foot, taking control early and winning the first two quarters with composure and intent. At one point in the third quarter, we led by 17 points.

A Nervy Finish

The narrow margin exposed areas we know must improve — particularly on the defensive end. Against what lies ahead, we understand the standard required.

Coach Thomas Sets the Tone

After the game, our head coach Selorm Thomas made our stance clear ahead of the clash with Al Ahly Benghazi:

“I don’t think they are much better than us. We are going to give it our all.”

He emphasized the details that will define the next game:

“We have to take care of the ball, stay focused, and crash the boards well. If we fight for rebounds, we can win.”

What Next

We now turn our attention to Al Ahly Benghazi. A win puts us within touching distance of the 2026 Basketball Africa League.
